A Round of Applause for Our LAMDA and Musical Theatre Stars!
We are bursting with pride as we celebrate the incredible achievements of our talented young performers who recently took part in their LAMDA and Musical Theatre exams. This term, students from Hinchley Wood, Rowan, Hill and Brae, Shrewsbury House, Cranmere, and Long Ditton St Mary’s wowed us with their dedication, creativity, and passion for performance.
From heartfelt monologues to dynamic duologues, and from expressive verse and prose to full-blown musical numbers, our students rose to the occasion with confidence and flair. It’s no small feat to stand in front of an examiner and perform, but each child brought their own unique spark to the stage.
The LAMDA Acting and Verse & Prose exams helped students develop vital skills in voice, expression, and storytelling, while our Musical Theatre students blended acting, singing, and movement to bring characters and songs to life with energy and emotion. For many, this was their first experience with formal performance exams—and they embraced it with incredible enthusiasm.
Over the past weeks, these young performers have worked tirelessly—memorising lines and lyrics, developing characters, refining their diction and vocal projection, and building the confidence to truly own their performances. The growth we’ve seen has been phenomenal.
Beyond the technical skills, these experiences have helped build resilience, teamwork, and self-assurance—qualities that will serve them far beyond the stage. Whether aiming for the West End or just learning to express themselves more clearly and confidently, every child has gained something special.
We are so proud of every single student who took part. You stepped up, gave it your all, and shone so brightly. And of course, a huge thank you to the supportive families and schools who made this possible—your encouragement has been instrumental in helping these children thrive.
We eagerly await the results, but no matter what, each one of you is already a star. Take a bow—you’ve earned it!
Bravo, team!

Healing Through Rhythm: How Music, Drama, and Dance Can Help Children Affected by Severe Trauma
Childhood trauma casts long shadows. For children who have experienced abuse, neglect, violence, or the loss of a loved one, the world can feel unsafe and unpredictable. These early, deeply unsettling experiences often manifest in anxiety, anger, withdrawal, and difficulty trusting others. But alongside traditional therapies, there is a powerful trio that is making a quiet yet profound difference in many young lives: music, drama, and dance.
Why the Arts Matter in Trauma Recovery
Trauma is not just a mental wound—it lives in the body. When a child’s nervous system becomes dysregulated by fear or grief, simply talking about their experiences can be too overwhelming. That’s where creative expression comes in. Music, drama, and dance offer children safe, non-verbal ways to release emotion, rebuild confidence, and re-establish connection.
These creative modalities tap into the body’s natural rhythms and the brain’s ability to rewire itself through positive, joyful experience. They don’t just help children cope—they help them heal.
Music: The Language of Emotion
Music bypasses the need for words. Whether it’s drumming, singing, or simply listening, music resonates with the emotional brain. It helps children regulate their breathing, heart rate, and mood. Structured music sessions can:
Create routine and predictability for children who feel unsafe
Allow children to express feelings they may not understand or verbalize
Encourage self-expression and mastery through learning instruments or rhythm games
Build trust and attachment through shared musical experiences
Even the simplest activities—like tapping out a beat, clapping in rhythm, or humming—can become powerful tools for grounding and connection.
Drama: A Safe Space to Tell the Story
For many children, acting out a story provides a safe way to explore difficult emotions. Through role-play and improvisation, they can practice problem-solving, experience empathy, and reframe their trauma stories in empowering ways.
Drama sessions help children:
Take on different roles and perspectives
Reclaim control by rewriting endings to painful experiences
Build confidence through performance
Improve communication and social skills in a low-pressure environment
Dramatic play also helps normalize emotions—anger, sadness, joy, fear—and teaches that all feelings are valid and manageable.
Dance: Releasing Trauma from the Body
Trauma lives in the body, and movement helps release it. Dance integrates physical expression with emotional healing. Children don’t have to be “good” dancers—they just need the space to move freely and feel.
Dance supports trauma recovery by:
Helping children reconnect with their bodies in safe, joyful ways
Improving motor skills, coordination, and balance
Releasing built-up tension and energy
Encouraging spontaneous, joyful expression
Group movement also fosters unity, belonging, and shared joy—especially important for children who feel isolated or different.
Building Safe Spaces
Crucially, music, drama, and dance sessions must be grounded in emotional safety, consistency, and trust. Trauma-informed teaching practices involve:
Clear, predictable routines
Gentle guidance with no pressure to perform
Freedom of choice and self-expression
Warm, attuned adults who listen, model, and support
These creative sessions should feel like a safe island in a chaotic world—a place where children can play, express, and slowly begin to heal.
The Transformational Power of the Arts
For many children affected by trauma, music, drama, and dance aren’t just extracurricular activities. They’re lifelines. They open the door to expression when words aren’t enough. They offer rhythm when life feels chaotic. They give voice to the unheard, movement to the frozen, and colour to the grey.
And perhaps most importantly, they remind children of something essential: that they are seen, valued, and capable of joy.
Why We Love LAMDA: Building Confidence Through Performance
At Scales & Tales, we’re proud to offer our students the opportunity to take part in LAMDA exams – a valuable, enriching experience that helps children grow in confidence, communication, and creativity.
What is LAMDA?
LAMDA stands for the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art – one of the UK’s most respected drama schools and awarding bodies. Their performance-based exams are designed to develop speaking, listening, performance, and interpretation skills in children and young people.
LAMDA exams are available in a wide range of disciplines, but at Scales & Tales we focus on:
• Acting
• Musical Theatre
• Verse and Prose
• Speaking in Public
Why Do We Take LAMDA Exams?
LAMDA exams offer more than just a certificate – they’re a powerful way to:
• Build real-world communication skills
• Develop confidence in speaking clearly and performing
• Encourage creativity and imagination
• Set and achieve goals, learning the value of preparation and practice
• Gain formal recognition – higher level LAMDA exams even carry UCAS points!
We believe in nurturing every child’s voice and helping them discover their potential – whether they dream of being on stage or just want to feel more confident in everyday life.
How Do LAMDA Exams Help Children?
Our students often tell us they feel braver, more focused, and more proud of themselves after preparing for and completing a LAMDA exam. The process supports:
• Speech clarity and expression
• Listening and responding skills
• Self-belief and independence
• Stage presence and presentation
Plus, they’re fun! Children love stepping into different characters, learning new songs or poems, and performing their pieces with flair.
Ready to step into the spotlight?
We support and guide each child through their LAMDA journey with positivity and encouragement. Whether it’s their first exam or their fifth, the goal is always the same: to help them grow, express themselves, and shine.
If you’d like to know more about entering your child for an upcoming LAMDA exam, just get in touch – we’d love to chat!

Rocking Weston Green: A Morning to Remember!
The air was electric at Weston Green’s first-ever rock concert, where two incredible bands, Summer of ‘69 and Smoke on the Water, took to the stage and delivered performances to the children and parents. The children were 6 to 9 years old in this group
From the moment the first guitar riff echoed the audience knew they were in for a great concert. Summer of ‘69 kicked things off with a high-energy set, bringing the nostalgic sounds of classic rock to life.
Then came Smoke on the Water, a solid performance. Great vocals and the timing and very together. They created a rock atmosphere with all the audience clapping along. The children were 9 to11 years old in this group
This was a celebration of passion, energy, and coming together as a group.
One thing was certain: Weston Green had just witnessed the birth of a new musical tradition.
Why Is Music So Good for Kids Learing
Music is a powerful tool for children’s development. It enhances memory, improves concentration, and fosters creativity. Whether through singing, playing an instrument, or simply listening, music engages multiple areas of the brain, making learning more effective and enjoyable.
Studies show that children who engage in music tend to have better language skills, improved mathematical abilities, and stronger social interactions. Rhythm and melody help with pattern recognition, while group music activities teach teamwork and patience. Plus, music provides a fun and stress-free way to learn!
Incorporating music into education—whether through songs for memorisation, learning an instrument, or movement-based musical activities—helps children retain information and develop essential life skills. So, if you want to boost your child’s learning, turn up the tunes and let the rhythm lead the way!
